BABYMETAL are a Japanese dance unit, combining heavy metal and J-pop into their own genre, kawaii-metal. They were formed originally in 2010, as a subunit of Sakura Gakuin, an idol group made up of middle school age girls. The original members were Nakamoto Suzuka (Su-Metal), Mizono Yui (Yuimetal) and Kikuchi Moa (Moametal). In 2018, Yuimetal left for health reasons. They used a rotating group of three backup dancers, called the Avengers -- Sayashi Riho, Fujihara Kano, and Okazaki Momoko, the latter two of whom had been Sakura Gakuin members as well. Momoko even mentioned once that she wanted to be in the heavy music club, aka the club that had been BABYMETAL. In 2023, she was announced as the official third member, taking on the metal name Momometal. This was a delight to everyone, because she is a delight.
On New Year's Eve, 2020, I watched the music video for Karate and spent the next couple of years going slowly insane. In November 2023, I saw BABYMETAL live for the first time and reached heights of obssession I never even dreamed of. And now I've decided to make that everyone's problem.
Or you can leave. But I'm going to keep talking.
